"The Dream Machine"
& "Black Drawings" by Igor Myszkiewicz
This book is an experiment. From the deepest archives I dug up my pathetic poetic attempts from my youth (I have no doubts about the quality of those whatsoever) and introduced them as text prompts for Stable Diffusion, an Artificial Intelligence model made available by Stability AI start-up. I had no idea what might grow out of such a fertilizer. Can AI handle a vague text, metaphor, poetry? I typed in the commands and the machine started dreaming. It was an experience difficult to compare with anything else. I was obtaining surprising, weird visions and at the same time I was finding bits of my dreams and emotions! Images were leading to other images, changing one word, sometimes just swapping one letter, lead to more transformations and iterations. Suddenly, I was no longer limited by time or technique, the ideas did not have to wait. I wasn’t getting the impression of working in software, it felt more like, um, collaboration? As an artist I didn’t feel replaced, it was more like I was completed, extended. What emerged are ambiguous, implicit artworks, leaving room for imagination of the viewer. The outcome of that experience is the titled ”The Dream Machine” published this year by TPZG Winnica.

Black Drawings is a classic of a classic - pen, ink pigment, paper and hours of painstaking work. I am not looking for novelty in terms of composition or approach to the subject - I rather pay homage to the masters of the past. I love the metaphysics of the drawing process itself, when after several hours of uninterrupted work, I almost penetrate under a dense grid of lines, when the drawn story seems to go through me; I don't compose it, I only record ready-made images coming out of the darkness. I understand their meaning later, when the work is finished, closed.
